Keeping up with kelp
Morgan Bennett-Smith

When we think of kelp, we often picture magical underwater forests swaying in the surge. Besides looking beautiful, kelp also generates tons of climate, ecosystem and human health benefits. Cultivation of kelp and other seaweed species represents the most rapidly-growing aquaculture sector.

Kelp, along with mangroves, seagrasses, tidal marshes and other coastal and marine flora, are critical to planetary and climate health. Globally, these algae sequester and store atmospheric carbon in their biomass and the sediment below them.
