I’m talking about the livelihoods and jobs it creates. I grew up near Santa Monica, California and volunteered at an aquarium underneath its world-famous pier (yes, this one), so I get that tourism is a big industry, but that just touches the surface of what the ocean provides. Fishing, shipping and renewable energy are just a few of the other engines that power coastal economies.
