That’s not a metaphor. According to the Wall Street Journal, there is an Estée Lauder facility in Melville, New York where giant kettles of seaweed swirl around while speakers pump in recordings of underwater sounds. The kelp is being fermented into what the company calls "Miracle Broth," the signature ingredient in Crème de la Mer, a face cream that retails at an eye-popping $390 for a two-ounce jar, or nearly $200 per ounce.
