Aquatic Deoxygenation: A New Planetary Boundary for Earth System Stability

Planetary boundaries refer to points at which Earth systems become irreversibly altered – tipping points that affect species, ecosystem, and human health, and likely creating knock-on effects and feedbacks within other systems. Among the nine currently recognized planetary boundaries are climate change, ocean acidification, land use change, and biodiversity loss—six of which have been assessed as having been crossed in 2023.
